Your walls are eight inches of framing, insulation, drywall, and stucco. Your window is a quarter inch of glass. That’s the whole story of why the street sounds like it’s in the living room. People come to us asking about noise reduction windows after they’ve already tried curtains, white noise machines, and closing the bedroom door — and they’re usually surprised to learn that the fix isn’t “thicker windows,” it’s a specific combination of four things, only one of which most salespeople bother to mention.
We’ve been cutting and installing glass in this valley since 1989, and a fair number of those jobs are on homes that sit a little too close to Foothill, Arrow Highway, Grand, or a freeway on-ramp. Here’s what actually works.
How noise reduction windows actually work
Sound is vibration moving through air and then through anything the air touches. A window can fight it in four ways, and they stack:
- Mass. Heavier, thicker glass is harder to vibrate. Going from 3mm to 6mm glass is a real, measurable improvement — but mass alone hits diminishing returns fast.
- Separation. Two panes with air between them work better than one thick pane, because the gap breaks the path. Wider gaps help more, which is why the best-performing assemblies aren’t standard windows at all.
- Damping. This is the one nobody mentions. Laminated glass — two lites bonded around a plastic interlayer — absorbs vibration instead of passing it along. It is the single biggest acoustic upgrade available in a normal-looking window.
- Asymmetry. Two panes of the same thickness resonate at the same frequencies and let that band right through. Pairing, say, 3mm with 5mm glass staggers the weak spots.
And then there’s the one that isn’t about glass at all: air leaks. Sound follows air. A perfect acoustic window with a worn weatherstrip or a warped sash is a screen door with a great résumé. The quick test
On the noisiest side of the house, close the window and put your ear near the edges of the sash and the meeting rail. If the sound is loudest at the edges, you have a sealing problem and new glass won’t fix it. If it’s loudest at the middle of the glass, the glass itself is the weak point — and that’s the one we can upgrade.
STC, OITC, and what the numbers mean
Acoustic performance gets quoted two ways. STC (Sound Transmission Class) is the common one, but it’s weighted toward speech frequencies. OITC (Outdoor–Indoor Transmission Class) weights the low rumble of traffic, trucks, and aircraft — which is what actually bothers you at 2 a.m. If a product only publishes an STC number, ask for the OITC too.
Useful rule of thumb: a roughly 10-point improvement is generally perceived as about half as loud. Going up three or four points is measurable but you may not notice it. Here’s roughly where common assemblies land — ranges, not promises, because frame, install, and opening size all move it:

What to do, cheapest first
Work down this list in order. Most homes get most of the benefit in the first three steps.
- Seal what you have. Fresh weatherstripping, a working latch that pulls the sash tight, and re-glazing loose putty. Cheap, fast, and it also cuts dust and drafts.
- Fix the frame, not just the glass. On older stucco-and-aluminum homes, gaps between the frame and the opening are a bigger leak than the glass. This is one of the recurring issues in why older Glendora homes have the window problems they do.
- Replace single-pane glass with dual pane. If you still have original single-pane aluminum, this is the biggest step change available — and it pays you back in heat and glare too. We walk through the conversion routes in single-pane to dual-pane.
- Specify a laminated lite on the street-facing rooms only. You don’t need it house-wide. Put it in the front bedrooms and the room you watch TV in, and put standard dual pane everywhere else. - Add a secondary interior window. The quietest option, because you can build in a wide air gap. It’s a real commitment — two sashes to open, two to clean — and it’s usually reserved for houses right on a major arterial or under a flight path.
Three upgrades that disappoint
These get sold as noise solutions and mostly aren’t:
- Argon or krypton gas fill. Excellent for thermal performance, which is why we like it — see are Low-E energy-efficient windows worth it? — but its acoustic contribution is small. Don’t buy gas fill expecting silence.
- Triple pane with three identical panes. More glass, same resonance problem, narrow gaps. A well-specified dual pane with a laminated lite usually beats it on sound and costs less.
- Heavy drapes by themselves. Drapes soften echo inside the room, which makes it feel calmer, but they do very little to stop sound coming through the assembly. Useful as a finishing touch, useless as the fix. The same goes for screens — solar screens are terrific for heat, as in keeping your house cool with window upgrades, but they aren’t acoustic products.

Around here the requests cluster in predictable places: homes along Route 66 and Foothill through Glendora and San Dimas, the Arrow Highway corridor, Grand Avenue, Baseline in Claremont and Upland, and anywhere within earshot of the 210, the 57, or the 10. Add in the valley’s other soundtrack — landscaping crews, early-morning trash pickup, and the occasional Santa Ana wind that makes a loose sash rattle all night — and the case for upgrading the street-facing openings gets easy.

We don’t publish a flat price for acoustic glass, because a 3×4 bedroom slider and an 8-foot picture window are not the same job, and laminated glass is priced by size and thickness. The bottom line
If you want a genuinely quieter house, the order is: seal the leaks, get to dual pane, then put laminated glass in the rooms that face the noise. Skip the gas-fill-and-triple-pane sales pitch unless you want it for heat. And treat any promise of “soundproof” windows with suspicion — nothing short of a wall is soundproof, but a well-specified window can turn a street you notice into a street you don’t.
