Quick wins to keep your house cool this week
While you’re deciding on bigger moves, these cost little or nothing:
- Work the timing. Close windows, blinds, and drapes on the sunny side before 10 a.m., then open up in the evening once outside air drops below inside air. In our valley the overnight cooldown is real — use it.
- Make sure windows actually open. Evening cross-ventilation only works if the sashes move. Heat-swollen and paint-stuck windows are a summer classic; try these five stuck-window fixes before you give up on a room.
- Refresh weatherstripping. Gaps that leak warm air in summer are the same gaps that leak heat in winter. Feel for warm drafts around sashes on a hot afternoon.
- Shade the glass outside. A patio umbrella, shade sail, or awning over a west window is crude but effective while you plan a permanent fix.
The permanent fix: low-E glass
When you’re ready to solve the problem at the glass itself, low-E (low-emissivity) coatings are the technology that changed the game. A microscopic metallic coating reflects infrared heat while letting light through — so the room stays bright but doesn’t cook.
